Samsung may have established itself as the leader for tablets that run Google’s Android operating system but Sony’s new power-packed and classy full-sized tablet poses a genuine challenge. Even better, you can drop it in water and it will survive.

The Z2 Tablet’s blazingly fast process is the same as the one built into the Samsung Galaxy S5 and recently launched HTC One M2 Smartphones. It also runs the latest version of the Android operating system (Android 4.4, known as KitKat).

Look and feel

Not only is it powerful but at just 6.4mm and 426g, this is one of the thinnest and lightest of the full-size tablets. Apple’s iPad is slightly thicker and heavier, at 7.5mm and 469g. And the Z2 Tablet has another plus – like Sony’s Xperia Smartphone handsets, the case is waterproof, which means it can be used safely in the rain and even dropped in a puddle or bath.

Its stylish industrial-feel minimalist design similarly echoes the Xperia handsets and the Sony Z1 tablet, which it replaces.

The Z2 Tablet is comfortable to hold in one hand, thanks in part to the thinness and the soft rubbery texture of the case on the back – and because the case material is more plastic rather than metal, which not everyone will like, of course. Some users may also complain that the wide bezel around the screen makes the Z2 Tablet look a little dated and “cheap” – which it certainly isn’t – but personally I like the way that helps avoid getting thumbprints on the screen when holding the Z2 Tablet in one hand....
